Broncos lose QB to academic difficulties
BOISE Boise State will look for its fourth starting quarterback in four years with news that Travis Stuart was ruled academically ineligible for his senior season.
Stuart, the starter last season and an honorable mention all-Big Sky Conference selection, failed to pass six credit hours during the summer session that ended Friday.
He had passed 18 hours in the spring semester after a poor fall term.
NHL questions Hall of Fame election
TORONTO Former NHL president Gil Stein ''improperly manipulated'' his nomination and election to the Hockey Hall of Fame and should not be inducted, according to a league report released Tuesday.
Stein, with his appointees on the Hall of Fame's board of directors, was elected to the shrine March 30.
He says he disagrees with the report's conclusion but is still declining induction, although he did not specify his reasons. Stein said he notified commissioner Gary Bettman of his decision several months ago.
Duran drops Fitzgerald
BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. Shawn Fitzgerald came out jabbing and dancing like an opponent from Roberto Duran's past. But when their fight was over Tuesday night at Casino Magic, Duran has gained his 90th victory and 62nd knockout.
The 42-year-old Duran, a four-time champion, forced the 23-year-old Fitzgerald on the ropes and unleashed a furious combination that put the Worchester, Mass., native on his knees with 1:33 gone in the sixth round.
M's Martinez returns to DL
SEATTLE For the third time this season, the Seattle Mariners have put 1992 American League batting champion Edgar Martinez on the 15-day disabled list because of an ailing left hamstring.
Martinez, a third baseman who led the majors with a .343 average last season, was put on the disabled list Tuesday. The club announced it has recalled left-hander Russ Swan from Class AAA Calgary to fill Martinez's roster spot.
The Mariners said Martinez, 30, might spend the remainder of the season on the disabled list in an effort to get him healthy for the 1994 season.
Garvey must pay back taxes alone
WASHINGTON Former major-league baseball star Steve Garvey has lost a court battle to force his ex-wife to help pay $500,000 in back taxes to the federal government.
A U.S. Tax Court judge ruled last week that he wouldn't interfere with an agreement between the Internal Revenue Service and Garvey's former wife, Cynthia Garvey. The agreement freed her from liability in a case involving a tax shelter, declaring her entitled to ''innocent spouse relief.''
Garvey challenged the March 22 stipulation, arguing that he should be entitled to show that his ex-wife had been deeply involved in the family's finances.
BSU's Childs hooks up with Spurs
BOISE After four years in the Continental Basketball Association, former Boise State University guard Chris Childs has signed a contract with the San Antonio Spurs, the NBA team announced.
Childs, a 6-foot-3 free agent, started 42 of 50 games for the Quad City Thunder during the 1992-93 season. He averaged 11.9 points and 5.8 assists per game.
Terms of his agreement with the Spurs were not announced.
Mets' Young sent down to minors
CINCINNATI Things really hit bottom for Anthony Young on Tuesday.
Young, who lost a major-league record 27th consecutive decision this season, was optioned to the New York Mets' Class AAA Norfolk farm team.
The Mets want Young, 27, to start for Norfolk, giving him a chance to work on his pitches. The struggling right-hander had been demoted to the bullpen, making his last 12 appearances in relief.
*The Cleveland Indians acquired first baseman-designated hitter Randy Milligan from the Cincinnati Reds for a player to be named later.
Milligan, 32, appeared in 83 games for the Reds and batted .274 with 29 RBI.
Vandals to scrimmage today
MOSCOW The University of Idaho football team will stage its first preseason scrimmage at 3 p.m. today, either outside or inside the Kibbie Dome, depending on the weather.
The full-contact drill, originally slated for this Saturday, is the first of two Vandal scrimmages, the second scheduled for Aug. 26. Coaches will look especially hard at wide receivers, defensive backs and offensive linemen.
The Vandals, who opened preseason camp last Wednesday and donned pads Saturday, open their season Sept. 2 at Stephen F. Austin.
State Outboard championship set
The Stateline Outboard Racing Association will hold its season championship on Saturday and Sunday at Nisqually John Landing, located west of the Port of Wilma.
Eight classes of competition will be held with racing getting under way at noon both days. Upward of 40 boats from around the region are expected to compete.

Grangeville takes Tribune Cup lead
GRANGEVILLE The home-course advantage proved valuable to the Grangeville Golf and Country Club, which surged into the lead Tuesday in the Tribune Cup women's golf standings.
Grangeville collected 471/2 points to drub second-place Clarkston (281/2), Orofino (221/2) and Lewiston (91/2).
The two-round standings are Grangeville 811/2, Clarkston 64, Orofino 351/2, Lewiston 35.
The third of four rounds will be Tuesday at Clarkston Golf and Country Club.
Bev McDonald posted a perfect score of 9 in the second round.
Lady Lakers take 8th at nationals
ENID, Okla. The Coeur d'Alene-based Lady Lakers finished eighth this past weekend in the 18-and-under girls' National Girls' Softball Tournament.
The Lakers, with Lewiston's Bobbi Jo Smith and Bobbi Taylor, posted a 2-2 record in the tournament. After opening with two wins, 13-6 over B.J. Bears of Kentucky and 9-3 over Team Texas of Lubbock, the Lakers fell 22-21 to the Pembroke (Fla.) Predators and were eliminated with a 12-8 loss to the Wilson Blasters of Kansas.
Smith posted a .636 batting average, third on the team, while Taylor hit .538.
