SUNNYSIDE -- Although they never came up with a clinching hit, the Asotin County Bucs rode the hot pitching of Neale Jentsch to a 3-0 victory over Prosser during Thursday's first round of the Washington senior Babe Ruth state tournament.

Asotin County will meet Casa Mia of Hoquiam today at 9 a.

m. This is a double-elimination, eight-team format.

Jentsch went the distance and limited Prosser to three hits. He retired the first nine batters of the game, and faced only five over the minimum.

Only one Prosser baserunner got as far as second base, and he was stranded there in the fifth.

"Neale pitched a great game," Bucs coach Kent Holland said. "(Prosser's) coach thought they actually hit the ball pretty well. They had a number of shots that went right to one of our outfielders."

But Asotin County squandered a number of chances, leaving 12 men stranded. The Bucs put up three single tallies, getting an RBI single from Chad Edwards in the first, a Joe Holland score on a fielder's choice in the third and a Jentsch run on an error in the fourth.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth, Asotin County had a chance to blow the game open. But Jentsch's line drive was fielded by Prosser's shortstop, who threw to first to catch the runner leading off.

"It could have easily been a triple play, if (the shortstop) would have thrown to second before he threw to first," Kent Holland said. "... That was a great chance, and we didn't get anything out of it."

Jentsch and Edwards paced Asotin County with two hits apiece.

The Bucs' opponent today, Casa Mia, defeated Puget Sound by a 7-2 count Thursday.

CRANBROOK, British Columbia -- A doubleheader sweep of Cranbrook clinched the North Idaho League AA championship for the Lewis-Clark Twins.

Moscow 12-0, Orofino 8-10

OROFINO -- Bases on balls proved pivotal in both games of a North Idaho A League doubleheader as Moscow won the opener 12-8 and Orofino took the nightcap 10-0.

The Blue Devils rang up 13 hits in the first game and supplemented that total with 10 walks. Ross Steele drove in three runs while Flip Kleffner had three hits and was one of three Moscow players with two RBI.

The Merchants benefited from 12 walks in the second game, three of which set the table for Nathan Haag's fourth-inning grand slam. Continued problems with pitching control led to Orofino's five-run sixth, which invoked the 10-run rule.

Andy Pottenger, providing what Orofino Jeff Wright called perhaps the Merchants' best pitching performance of the season, scattered six hits while striking out seven and walking none.

Orofino goes to 8-2 in league.
