In order to meet requirements for moving up to compete in NCAA Division II, Lewis-Clark State College will announce later this week that it is adding men's and womens golf and cross country to its athletic program.

LCSC has scheduled a press conference for Thursday to announce the addition of the four sports for the 1996-97 school year.

LCSC currently competes at the NAIA level for all sports. Last spring, the school applied for NCAA Division II status and will compete at that level in all sports but baseball, which will compete as a Division I program. That change, however, isn't expected to take place for another three years.

To compete at the NCAA Division II level, LCSC must have eight sports programs. LCSC currently has six with baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's tennis and women's volleyball. LCSC also sponsors a men's and women's rodeo teams, but the NCAA does not count rodeo as a qualifying sports program.

Also, since baseball will compete at the NCAA Division I level, it also won't count toward the eight sport minimum since all sports must compete at the same level.

Golf and cross country are among the cheapest programs to fund as the only major expense involved is travel and several colleges in the Pacific Northwest already have cross country and golf teams so scheduling shouldn't be difficult.
