Bengal girls win on road in OT contest; LHS boys fall at home

One night after handling league rival Post Falls, the Lewiston High girls' basketball team kept the train moving with an exhausting overtime nonleague road win over Walla Walla on Wednesday.

On the other side of the Idaho-Washington border, the Lewiston boys mounted an impressive second-half rally that came up just short in a season-opening loss to the Blue Devils at Booth Hall.

WALLA WALLA - With their legs wearing down and Walla Walla charging, the Lewiston girls mustered just enough energy to get past the Blue Devils in overtime to improve to 4-0 on the year.

Playing their second game in as many nights, and first on the road, the Bengals weren't as crisp as they usually are in the early going and trailed 12-6 after the game's first eight minutes.

"They told us their legs were tired at halftime," Lewiston coach Pat Teichmer said. "We told them that it was a mental game and they fought through it really well. I thought we played with a lot of energy in overtime."

Down by four at the break, the Bengals took their coach's words to heart and overturned the deficit to take a one-point lead into the fourth quarter.

Up by three with time winding down, Lewiston was forced to play four more minutes when Walla Walla banked in a 3 with four seconds left.

"They had to make a tough shot, which they did," Teichmer said.

In the extra period, the Bengals jumped out on the Blue Devils, eventually pushing the contest out of reach when Brett Hastings converted on a putback and Cali Moscrip followed up with a pair of free throws.

"We're very pleased with them," Teichmer said "Their effort was great. Their attitudes were great. This was a situation that was presented to us, to go to overtime and to have a challenge against a good team like that, and we were very happy to come out of it the way we did. It was a great early-season challenge."

One night after scoring 17 points in a win over Post Falls, Emilee Schlader tallied 11 for the Bengals. Halle White and Lynzee Wilson each added nine points.

The Bengals will head to Hermiston, Ore., on Friday. The last four games between the two have been decided by one possession.

BOYS

For the Lewiston boys, it was a rough start, but an inspiring finish.

Still shaking off the offseason cobwebs, the Bengals fell behind by as many as 14 to Walla Walla at Booth Hall, but clawed back to make it a one-possession game before eventually succumbing to the Blue Devils.

"We had no idea what to expect," Lewiston coach Corey Williams said of the season opener. "We're an absolute work in progress. We're going to go pressure and get after people.

"Down by 14, the kids could've folded against a pretty good team, but they rallied. We just needed one more rebound and one more shot, but we couldn't get it."

Missing their scoring touch from the outset, the Bengals quickly fell into a double-digit hole.

"We just had trouble scoring the basketball in the first half," Williams said. "We picked it up in the second half and got them out of their comfort zone."

With the Blue Devils reeling, Lewiston made its move, pulling to within three with little time to spare.

Walla Walla, however, was able to convert its free throws down the stretch to escape with a win.

Jaydan Kaufman (15 points), Dakota Jackson (14) and Vince Hewett (13) each reached double figures for the Bengals.
