PULLMAN - The University of Southern California football player who allegedly assaulted a 20-year-old Washington State University student who was storming the field will not be charged.
While Washington State University Police recommended felony charges against Liam Jimmons, 19, a second-year freshman defensive lineman for the Trojans, Whitman County Prosecutor Denis Tracy has found there is not enough evidence to prove Jimmons assaulted the student beyond a reasonable doubt.
According to a letter from Tracy, who viewed multiple videos of the incident, the WSU fan, running toward the center of the field, and Jimmons, running toward the locker room, met at a 90-degree angle on the field.
Tracy wrote neither of them saw each other until the last second.
"Jimmons only saw (the fan) at the last moment before running into (him)," Tracy wrote in the letter.
While Jimmons did push the fan, Tracy wrote Jimmons' push was to avoid a collision or falling to the ground and receiving his own physical injury.
Tracy went on to write, fans were instructed to not storm the field and to wait for USC players to exit the field. He wrote the student was thereby trespassing, but charges will not be filed.
The student who got hit has been to the hospital twice, first for a hip injury and second for a concussion - both of which are injuries said to be caused from the assault.
Tracy wrote a civil suit could still be pursued in the case.
The incident occurred after the Trojans' 30-27 loss to the Cougars in Pullman on Sept. 29.
