MERIDIAN - Absorbing a rare no-hit loss in the opener, the Lewiston Bengals were dealt a doubleheader sweep at the hands of undefeated Rocky Mountain in prep baseball action Saturday.

The Bengals lost 12-2 and 8-0, going hitless in the first game against two pitchers despite scoring two first-inning runs.

"We didn't play especially bad - they're one of the better high-school teams I've seen in my 19 years of coaching," the Bengals' Tom Grunenfelder said. "Up and down the lineup, they really swing the bat, they play great defense and they throw strikes. And we saw the bottom part of their rotation."

Mike McAllister and Johnny McNerney of Rocky Mountain (9-0) teamed up for the no-hitter despite combining for five first-inning walks. McNerney settled down and walked only one in the second through fifth innings.

"They probably saved three or four base hits by getting good jumps on the ball and making nice plays," said Grunenfelder, who watched a Bengal team get no-hit for perhaps the second time in his long tenure.

The Bengals (6-3) got solid relief efforts from two left-handed pitchers making their season debuts: Vinnie Agueda, who has been serving a suspension for an incident last season, and Aaron Kracke, recovered from a collarbone fracture.

Mason Smith and Bryce Fiest laced three doubles apiece for Rocky Mountain, coached by former Lewis-Clark State player Jake Taylor.

In the second game, Orofino scored 10 of its 12 runs in the fifth inning.
