RATHDRUM - Lewiston High's soccer teams both had to settle for ties in their first action of the season Tuesday, but both Bengal coaches were relatively pleased.
The Bengal boys rattled off three straight second-half goals to take a one-score lead, but Lakeland squeezed in the equalizer to forge a 4-4 tie. In the girls' match, another late Hawks' score, this off a blocked penalty kick, resulted in a 1-1 deadlock.
Lewiston wasn't sure if it would play these matches because of concerns over smoky conditions, but got the OK in the late morning Tuesday and made the trip.
The Lewiston boys got two goals apiece from Austin Jacks and Carlos Gonzalez, with Gonzalez's tally in the 72nd minute putting Lewiston up 4-3.
But the Hawks knotted it up on Davis Moruzzi's score in the 76th, and that was the final tally.
"I couldn't ask more from the guys in the first game," Bengals coach Jim Hill said. "... It took a lot of guts and grit to keep coming back."
There was no score in the girls' contest until the 64th minute, when Lewiston's Demi Randall scored on a Sasha Mortensen assist. The Bengals had two other goals waved off on penalties.
In the 70th minute, Lewiston goalie Kaysha Bailey stopped a penalty kick, but the rebound went to Lakeland's Whitnee Skalskiy and she punched in the tying goal.
"We played really well at times. We didn't play consistently for the whole half in either half," Bengals girls' coach Jim Kirk said. "Good result for the first game, but really we've got some growing to do."
The Lewiston teams will again travel together Friday to play a doubleheader at Sandpoint. The girls' match is scheduled for 5 p.m. and the boys' contest is set for 7.
