POMEROY - Defending state champion Pomeroy lost its first set of the postseason but roared back to beat Garfield-Palouse on Wednesday in the Washington Class 1B District 9 volleyball tournament.

The Pirates dropped the Vikings 23-25, 25-12, 25-12, 25-9 to earn a spot in Saturday's district championship match.

Pomeroy (22-3) was paced by Ally Bott (17 kills), Sydney Smith (20 assists), Toni Cloud (24-for-25 serving with two aces) and Kacey Halbert (17 digs). Stepping up at the net was Bryena Myrick, who notched six stuffed blocks.

"Real pleased the kids were able to overcome losing the first set," Pirates coach Jim Greene said.

Pomeroy will face Oakesdale for the District 9 title at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Colfax. The winner will qualify for State while the loser will still have a chance of making it.

Gar-Pal opened Wednesday's play at Pomeroy by beating Touchet 25-22, 18-25, 25-16, 25-17. The Vikings will also play Saturday at Colfax.

Wildcats go 1-1

OAKESDALE - Colton battled to a five-set win of St. John-Endicott, then was swept by Oakesdale in the Washington Class 1B District 9 tournament.

After beating the Eagles, the Wildcats lost to Oakesale 25-18, 25-16, 25-22.

Colfax remains alive and will face Touchet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Colfax.

Colfax advances to semis

COLFAX - Colfax moved into the semifinals of the Washington Class 2B District 7/9 tournament with a 25-19, 22-25, 25-17, 25-12 over Reardan.

The Bulldogs will tangle with Wilbur-Creston on Saturday at Asotin High at 11:45 a.m. The winner will advance to the district title match.

Leading Colfax, Carmen Gfeller had 23 kills, seven blocks and went 19-for-21 serving.

"Reardan was up 6-5 in the fourth game, and when she took the line, she served eight straight points," Colfax coach Sue Doering said of Gfeller, whose tallied four of her nine aces over the stretch.

Morgan Lord added 22 digs for Colfax while Ashtyn Aune and Katelyn Scholz tallied identical statlines: 15 assists and 15 digs.

"Good, hard-fought match," Doering said.
