APRIL 19, 1897 — The first Boston Marathon, then called the B.A.A. Road Race, was won by John J. McDermott in 2 hours, 55 minutes, 10 seconds. The world’s oldest annual marathon was inspired by the success of the first marathon at the 1896 Summer Olympics.
