Legion

MISSOULA, Mont. - The Lewis-Clark Twins saw errors cost them their opening contest at the Missoula Mavericks Memorial Tournament Thursday.

But after absorbing a 13-12 loss to the Spokane Expos, the Twins bounced back with a resounding 8-0 shutout of Central Washington behind a complete-game three-hitter by pitcher Austen Jones.

Throwing to contact, Jones ceded just one walk and relied upon his teammates behind him as he retired just one batter by strikeout.

Efficiently mowing through batters, Jones threw just 68 pitches and "they kept beating it on the ground," Twins coach Allen Balmer said of his team's opposition in the nightcap.

The Twins lost their early game in walkoff fashion, though Balmer noted what really cost them was a five-run sixth-inning in which they spotted the Expos all their runs in unearned fashion.

With the split, the Twins, who will face the tournament host Missoula Mavericks tonight at 6 p.m. PST, moved to 6-4 on the year.

Lewis-Clark Cubs 19, Asotin County Blues 17

In a wild contest, the Lewis-Clark Cubs downed the Asotin County Blues at Harris Field despite nearly blowing a ten-run lead early in the contest.

After taking an 7-0 lead from the get-go after the Blues committed half their eight errors in the opening frame, the Cubs extended their advantage before committing three errors of their own in the fourth-inning. That's when the Blues scored six runs to come back alive, and an eight-run fifth inning by Asotin County put the visitors in the lead.

Both teams combined for 15 errors and 25 hits.

For Asotin County, Dalton James had two RBI on two singles while Elliott Marks added two hits, one of them registering an RBI.

The teams will play again today at 7 p.m., that contest also at Harris Field.

"We've got to tip our cap to our team, we competed out butts off and it was the same for both teams," said Asotin County assistant Terry Black.
