COLFAX -- Jeff Pittman's run-scoring triple and Greg Biagi's sacrifice fly represented the only offense in a game dominated by pitching as Whitman County bested the Pullman Posse 2-0 Wednesday in the first round of the Spokane Athletic Roundtable's Class A American Legion baseball playoffs.
With the victory, the Cougars, the tournament's third seed, move on to face No. 2 University High in a best-of-three series, which will begin today in Spokane. The second game will be in Colfax on Friday and the third game, if needed, will be Saturday in Spokane.
The Posse, the sixth seed, was eliminated.
While neither pitcher tallied huge strikeout numbers, they did keep the hits and free bases down. Whitman County's John White permitted five hits while walking three and striking out three. Pullman's Adam Elder allowed four hits while walking one and striking out two.
The Cougars did all their damage in the fourth inning, as Rick Templeton opened the frame with a single. Pittman then knocked him home and Biagi flew out to score Pittman.
All five on Pullman's hits were singles while the Cougars' total included two triples.
