A woman was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head by Lewiston police on Tuesday evening in the Lewiston Orchards, according to a news release sent just after midnight Wednesday.
The woman was taken to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in critical condition, according to the news release. No one else was hurt in the incident.
The initial report made to police at about 8 p.m. Tuesday from the 3200 block of Ninth Street in the Orchards was that a woman was outside firing shots from a pistol toward a house that was occupied. When police officers arrived, they set up a perimeter and shut down streets in the area, according to the news release.
A woman was then found in the backyard of the house that was reportedly being fired at. Police then discovered she had the gunshot wound, according to the news release.
Officers began life-saving measures and called for medics.
The only property damage was to the house where the woman was found, according to the news release. The 3200 block of Ninth Street was closed for about three hours.
"This case is still under active investigation and no names or other information is being released at this time," according to the news release.
