NATIONAL SUMMARY

Periods of rain will move over central Pennsylvania and New

York then into upstate New York and parts of New England

today. Showers and thunderstorms are forecast from New York

City down to North Carolina. Steadier rain can be expected

along the Carolina coastline. Temperatures across much of

the Midwest and Plains will feel much more fall-like since

the cold front has passed. Lake-effect showers may dot the

shores along the Great Lakes; there can also be waterspouts

near the shores. In the Northeast, rough surf and rip

currents are possible due to an offshore tropical rainstorm.

A heat wave that has already broken some daily record highs

will persist in the West. In the Northwest, smoke from

wildfires could lead to poor air quality in places such as

Portland, Oregon, and Seattle.
