Dec. 10, 1940 - May 2, 2015
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Derwood was unexpectedly called home to heaven Saturday, May 2, 2015.
He was born in Aurora, N.C., to Rachel (Griffin) and Howell Jones. The family moved to Franklin, Va., where Derwood excelled in school at science, tennis and baseball. He then attended North Carolina State University.
In 1965, he moved with his sons, Collin and Reid, to Seattle, where Derwood pursued his outdoorsman passion at Klineburger Brothers, going on safari in Africa and hunting expeditions in Alaska. In 1974, he married Carol (Newhall), with her children, Elizabeth, Ted and Matthew. Together with their five children, they built a family and deeply loved each other. Derwood's professional career spanned from Klineburger Brothers, Pacific Marine Schwabacher and Daiwa Sporting Goods. In January 1991, he and Carol moved to the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley, where Derwood was the director of sales for Blount/ATK. He retired in April 2005.
Derwood will be remembered as an avid outdoorsman, actively fly fishing, bass fishing and bird and game hunting. Through his patience and gift of teaching, he taught his children and grandchildren the importance of stewardship. He will also be remembered as a skilled woodworker, crossword puzzle expert and avid Mariner and Seahawk fan. He was a mentor and friend to many.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; sons Collin, Reid, Ted (Amy) Rippee and Matthew (Kristine) Rippee; daughter Elizabeth (Rippee) Butowicz; 14 grandchildren; sister Carol (Grant) Brock; brother Wayne Jones; and many nieces and nephews.
We will honor his memory with a celebration of life at 1 p.m. Saturday at SonRise Church, 2620 22nd St., Clarkston.
